Halls of Holly could improve
Special correspondent Gisborne The Cambridge trainer, Laurie Laxon, had a fine innings on the first day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, winning three events, but one of his beaten runners, Halls of Holly, may be capable of improvement on the second day there tomorrow. Halls of Holly covered a lot of extra ground during the corresponding event on Wednesday but favoured with a better draw looks capable of upsetting the favourites in the Chardon Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The five-year-old has generally been consistent in his racing and while he has yet to succeed beyond 1600 m will get few better chances than that offered to him tomorrow. Purple Reign is a fresh runner. He was just beaten by Bullet Proof at Wairoa and then scored easily in highweight company on the final day. Intentions are for the three-year-old to contest the New Zealand St Leger and if he is to warrant a start in the classic then he will need to play a leading .prole in tomorrow’s racer
Wharf Logger was another whose chances were not helped on the first day by covering extra ground and with a more patient ride is certain is improve on his fourth placing. Count Jim, Gold Mary and Cinnamon Queen were the principals on the first day and are likely to figure prominently again. The Takanini trainer,
Kevin Crampton, has four engaged in the second leg of the T.A.B double, the Kaiti Service Station Handicap. Vidmatic was fourth on the first day and Moana Breeze was fifth. The latter was confidently expected to do better but she failed to improve in the home straight. Laxon has two runners, the first-day winner, Burmead Star, and Relin-
quish, engaged, and each should do well. Burmead Star showed plenty of courage in edging outsider Vanity Lane from the top spot in the Royal Hotel Handicap and with only an extra kilo could repeat. Vanity Lane went within a stride of causing a major upset and she is likely to be right in the action from the outset again.
