Frederick has fine chance at Cambridge

Special correspondent Auckland Frederick has a fine chance at the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting this evening of giving Sandy Purdon’s stable some compensation for Placid Victor’s ill luck in last week’s Auckland Trotting Cup.

Placid Victor was going well in the $250,000 Max Harvey-sponsored race until he was checked by the breaking Quite Famous nearing the home turn. A little further on, he “copped it” again. This time, he was so severely checked he went into a break and injured a leg as well. He will not race again this season. Frederick could prove a worthy substitute for the stable. He has always been held in high regard by Purdon and splendid performances in his latest two races have indicated Frederick is back to his best form. Frederick’s main opposition looks like coming from Luxury Liner and Metal Mickey, with Kev’s Choice and Skipper Vantar also sure to be well backed. Luxury Liner, on C 9, is the most tightly assessed runner. Frederick,

Mickey and Skipper Vantar have C 8 assessments and Kev’s Choice is on C 6. Scratchings have reduced the field for the 2200 m event to 10 with only Luxury Liner in the second row. It is an awkward draw but with only reasonable luck in the running Luxury Liner must be tough to beat In his latest appearance, at Alexandra Park on January 31, he scored handsomely off 20m in a race with a C 6 front. Well back early, he proved much too good for a pretty strong field. He was two lengths to the good at the finish after covering the 2700 m in 3min. 28.45, splendid time from a standing start Metal Mickey has not paid a dividend in his last four races but he has had little luck. Skipper Vantar received a start of 10m from Metal Mickey but he won so well he deserves strong consideration.
