Fillies bring record price on first day of sale

By

G. K. YULE

Two fillies sold on behalf of Roydon Lodge Stud, Weedons, topped the first day of the National sales of standardbred yearlings held in Christchurch yesterday. They were also sold at a record price for fillies. The old record price for a filly of $29,000, paid last year for one by Farm Timer from Bellajilly, was passed early in the day when Mr John O’Dea, of Hawera, went to $32,500 for one by Smooth Fella from Hurricane Star

offered on behalf of the stud.

Hurricane Star, the winner of seven races, claims Arania as her second dam. At the stud Hurricane Star has had three to the races and all have won. They include Galaxy Scott and Hurricane Scott. Later in the sale Mr Mick Lombardo, of Perth, went to a new record price of $36,000 to secure a filly by Noodlum from Neat Meadow, a daughter of Smooth Fella and the American-bred mare, Meadow Golden, a member of a fine New Zealand family, which has produced such winners as Roydon Glen and Preux Chevalier.

For Roydon Lodge it was a grand sale as they also offered the toppriced colt, one by Smooth Fella from Mary Gale. He was purchased by Mr John Curtin, of Reporoa, for $32,000. A brother to the well-per-formed Perth filly, Smooth Gale, he is closely related to Roydon Glen. Altogether the stud sold seven lots during the day for $144,000, an average of $20,571.

The sale was far from satisfactory for many of the vendors and passings were frequent, 56 lots failing to meet reserves. The highest passing was $47,500 for a colt by Smooth Fella from the Cup class mare, Idolmite. Buyers were interested , mainly in the progeny of . proven sires and those from winner-producing mares.

Altogether 86 lots were sold for $576,750, an average of $6706, compared .with $7272 for the whole sale last year. The average could be boosted . when some choice lots go . under the hammer today. Australian buyers were not nearly as active as usual and bought only 11 lots for $161,350, an average of $14,668. Mr Lombardo was the most active, buying three lots for $BB,OOO.
