Alynda tries for fifth win on end

Special correspondent. Auckland

Mindful of Diamond Lover’s fate at Te Rapa on Tuesday betters at Matamata tomorrow might not be in such a great hurry to back Alynda. The Cambridge filly is pretty certain to be a clear favourite, nevertheless, in the Matamata Racing Club’s $65,000 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes. Alynda will be going for her fifth win in a row as was Diamond Lover when a beaten, even-money favourite at Te Rapa. Nicely placed by her ownertrainer, Alan Jones, Alynda has had no trouble winning her four races. If she takes this fifth race, against such other very smart youngsters as Miss Emma, Scotch ‘N’ Dry and Grumpy’s Choice, she will establish herself, very securely, as the best two-year-old filly this season. Victory in the style of her four already would almost certainly have Jones thinking very seriously of an autumn campaign in Australia with her.

Alynda, an Australian bred, is as yet untested. Jones has none in his stable able to go with her, and her wins, three times over 880 m and the last one over 1200 m, at Rotorua, have been accomplished effortlessly.

Alynda will need to go quickly then stay on strongly because Miss Emma, Scotch ‘N‘ Dry and Grumpy’s Choice all have plenty of pace and they have shown themselves to be stout finishers.

Grumpy’s Choice, also from Cambridge, trained by Roger Lang, has been a winner in two of her only four starts. Miss Emma, trained by Ken Thompson, at Rotorua, has managed three wins and three second placings from six attempts, and Scotch *N’ Dry, from the Adams and Wheeler stable, at New Plymouth, is unbeaten in three races, the first on her home course, the other two at Trentham. Miss Emma was to have run again, in the Evergreen Lodge Stakes at Trentham last month, but had to be withdrawn at the last minute after suffering a kick while in the birdcage. Missing the Trentham race might not have done Miss Emma any harm. A fortnight previously she made a big impression beating Kingston Lane and seven others in the Great Northern Foal Stakes.

The luck of the barrier draw went Miss Emma’s way. She will start from the very inside, Alynda

from No. 7 and Scotch ‘N’ Dry between the other two, at No. 5. It is right against Grumpy’s Choice that she drew the extreme outside. It would take a great performance in a field of this strength to win from there.

The Breeders’ Stakes was introduced by the Matamata Racing Club in 1969, the club’s jubilee year, with a modest prize of $2250. Thoroughbred breeders In the district have since joined in to bring the value to its present level. The increase in stakes all round has been remarkable. In 1969 the ninerace programme offered just $15,300 in prize money. For tomorrow the total is $150,000. The Logan Thoroughbred Insurance Plate, for the two-year-old colts and geldings, worth $25,000, the class 1 Castlemaine XXXX Handicap, of $12,000, and the Waikato Times Handicap, a sprint, of $lO,OOO, are other big attractions. All three races should be well fought but it will be surprising if Yenolom and Kingston Lane do not dispute the finish in the two-year-old race and Amloch and Trocane (Castlemaine XXXX) and Silver Tip (Waikato Times Handicap) do not also show up very well.
