Able Tim prevails

By

J. J. BOYLE

Because of a malfunction in the machinery, the starting gates were opened manually for the Mulken Mining Handicap, first leg of the Riccarton Turf Club’s double at Riccarton yesterday. The field left the stalls in three slightly staggered formations and one of those affected was Firetint, a dominating favourite. Officials acted quickly and the starting gates were back in working order before the next race on the programme. The Mulken Mining Handicap still managed to provide a tight two-sided finish, with Able Tim and Keen Pell as the principals. Able Tim responded well to every vigorous call made on him by John Dowling and beat the West Coast-owned and trained chestnut by a head. Te Kaahu, another runner for a West Coast stable, was a length and a half back third, just beating the second favourite, Travanti. Firetint was always well down the field after that ragged start and wound up seventh in the field of 13. Chris Johnson, who rode Firetint, had a change of luck in the second leg, the Godvari 1600. He landed White Lip a narrow winner over the more strongly supported Slick- Million and the result appeared to hinge on their respective fortunes at the start. Slick Million was one of the slowest away but White Lip was quickest to accelerate and Johnson had her in a trailing position almost from the start. Slick Million took gaps readily in the straight in his pursuit of White Lip but the four-year-old Amalgam mare from Michael Pitman's stable kept him out by a nose. The win favourite, Vendee, shlfided Charlie’s Pal

and Red Rolfe in a tight finish for third, but in a gap of four lengths behind the first two. Michael Pitman and the jockey, Chris Johnson, again combined successfully in the final event. Johnson brought Remus’es Flight on a well timed late run to win the Longbeck 1200 by a nose from Crikey Dick, with an outsider, Our Hope, just shading Blazing Bernie for third.
