Tomorrow’s Otago programme pays tribute to Andertons

By

J. J. BOYLE

LION BROWNS

IRACING TIPS |

The Otago Racing Club’s programme at Wingatui tomorrow has a special character about it It recognises the contribution of the Anderton family to the thoroughbred industry in Otago and beyond. Appropriately, the principal race bears the name of the Anderton-owned White Robe Lodge, home of the champion, Noble

Bijou. To match the occasion, sons and daughters of that successful stallion are ex’pected to play key roles in the finish of the $22,000 metric mile.

Noble Note, one of Noble Bijou’s most distinguished sprinter-milers, returns to Wingatui for a race he won in style last year.

Last year he won by two lengths and Noble

After a titanic battle with Steven John at Blenheim on Monday it will be interesting to see how WORLD OF FAME measures up at Addington in the Regency Pace on Saturday night. Vince Davies has little doubt he will measure up very strongly and it would be hard to disagree with him on the horse’s runs at Nelson and Blenheim. World of Fame looks one of the most improved handicappers about and it will be a surprise if he does not pay a dividend. Interdominion time is drawing near with several hopefuls on trial at Addington but the one who really needs a form boost is LADY EL. She didn’t figure in the finish on the first night but her luck wasn’t all that good either.

Robin Butt knows the singer is as important as the song and the mare would have to show some dash from this draw to justify flying off to Brisbane. My pick is that she will do just that.

UNCLE JASPER had to be the unlucky runner in the three-year-old race on Wednesday night which makes him a gilt edged prospect back to handicap company in the Vistalite. A handy horse at his best he seems to have really “come right” in recent weeks and he will be hard to head tomorrow.

The big Miracle Mile looks a lot more open now that Roydon Glen is out, but in spite of Master Mood’s recent form I think I’ll stick with the old hands BORANA and OUR MANA in a race like this. Borana had to be desperately unlucky in the Auckland Cup and while there may be better milers about he looks much improved in the last few months. Our Mana has drawn behind a good one and he still has a very smart sprint home when he gets the chance to use it. FREES BEST didn’t quite make it at Addington but she had no luck at all at Blenheim last Monday getting more checks early on than a bank teller.

She meets an average field in the Kaban Mobile and it would surprise me if she didn’t get some of it.

Racing at Wingatui tomorrow will be interesting but a weather eye will be a big help.

If there’s been some rain NOBLE NOTE will start and should win though Satinys Pride has a big pull in the weights and might surprise the favourites. The Ashburton horse SIR REGGIE is not headline material but it will be should he make his mark in the opening event.

Princess increased the input of Noble Bijou by finishing third.

Noble Princess is engaged again tomorrow. So is the Gore-trained Chook a Rook, which split Noble Note and Noble Princess last year, and has strong form recommendations for this year’s renewal.

Chook a Rook does not belong to the Noble Bijou tribe, but the brilliantly successful son of Vaguely Noble supplies five of the first six in the handicap. Besides he has a likely pair in the lower half of the handicap in Dig In and Satiny’s Pride. Dig In, now trained at Riccarton by Myles Johnson, came back promisingly after a spell for a second behind Noble Note over 1400 m at Riccarton last week.

Dig In won the White Robe Lodge Handicap as a four-year-old three years ago and would not have to improve much on his latest run to be a force with 50kg tomorrow. Satiny’s Pride goes into the race with 48.5 and a good case can be made for her chances after recent placed runs at Trentham and Riccarton. She had Noble Note behind her when she finished second to Harbor Flo over 1400 m on the second day of the Wellington Cup meeting.

Last time out she was third behind Noble Note and Dig In over the same distance at Riccarton.

Although she never struck a blow at the winner in that one, she showed finishing powers to suggest she will make a good fist of the metric mile. For a stallion that has been represented by dozens of competent middle distance performers Noble Bijou has a surprisingly small representation in the 2200 m Noble Bijou Handicap, second leg of the Otago T.A.B. double.

His only representative will be Noble Ella, whose form record this season has something of a rollercoaster look about it. Variations in the Noble Ella form line appear to be largely linked with track conditions, and if the ground is easy or worse tomorrow this four-year-old should improve on anything she showed in two starts at the Vincent meeting last month. Earlier on her holiday programme Noble Ella ran third on this course at this distance on an easy track.

Sea Swift, winner of that race, put lustre on that form by going on to win the Invercargill Gold Cup.

Double Lang, also from Wingatui, and Flyer, from Invercargill, are others on the short list of fancies in the Noble Bijou Handicap.
