Borana could gain compensation in Addington mile

By

G. K. YULE

Borana should gain some minor compensation for his desperately unlucky fourth in last Saturday’s Auckland Cup when he contests the Television New Zealand Miracle Mile at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow. Borana’s placing last

Saturday was a remarkable one as he was i brought almost to a i standstill as he attempted - to avoid the breaking Vic- - torian pacer, Quite Fami ous, with about 400 m to i run. That he was able to s get going again and surge i into fourth said much for t his great ability. While most regard Borana as a true-blue t stayer, he has great

sprinting prowess. With Roydon Glen on the sideline, the field is one of the weakest to contest a big mile, which should help Borana come out on top.

Two talented four-year-olds in Master Mood and Quiet Touch and the hardy warhorse, Our Mana, look the trio likely to provide Borana with most opposition.

Master Mood is a most versatile performer in superb form, with six wins on end to his credit, including the Wellington Cup. He has drawn the coveted No. 1 barrier position and no doubt he will try for an all-the-way win, something quite within his capabilities. Quiet Touch, the most lightly-raced runner in the race, is also one of the

more exciting pacing prospects in sight. She has had six wins and two placings from her nine appearances, the most recent of which was on Wednesday when she jogged a mile in 2min. Quiet Touch is on the improve and even from an awkward draw she has to be respected. Our Mana’s great re-

cord for consistency speaks for itself and along with Freighman he appeals most of the others. Three outstanding four-year-old trotters in Wedgewood, Firm Offer and Borrowed Time appear to dominate the second leg of the double, the Blenheim Road Motor Hotel Handicap.

2 3121 Smarty Pants 2 It Did well to win in moderate time on Wednesday. Big step in class, but in current form must at least be a place chance. 3 3698 Lord Louie 3 It Form background weak, but better than that. Good chance in this field. 4 0942 Andronicus 4M. Perriton it In open and not disgraced when shaded by Smarty Pants on first night. Rough chance at best. 5 1234 Borana SP. Jones It So unlucky when fourth in Auckland Cup last week. Looks the likely winner. 6 0505 Freightman S M. de Filippi It Latest fifth was in a sprint behind Roydon Glen last month. Would be preferred over more ground, but capable of a merry mile. 7 1954 Chipaluck 7 it Fair run when fourth on Wednesday. Little appeal. 8 3121 Quiet Touch 8 it Won with minimum of effort on Wednesday. Sharp rise in class should not stop her going close even from this draw. 9 2130 Our Mana 9C. de Filippi it Disqualified from fifth in Auckland Cup. Raced well before that. Fine miler sure to be close to the major money. 10 0068 Diamond Mooae 10R. Butt It Out of form since Cup day last November. Take a risk. 11 4400 Spry Joker 11J. Carmichael It Met trouble in Auckland Cup. Capable on his day, but will need luck in this field. 12 5315 Aran Blaze 12 It Fair fifth on first night. This will be harder. 13 2976 Ruthless 13R. Nyhan It Made ground for sixth to Smarty Pants on Wednesday when making a fresh start. Will be tested in this class. 14 2339 Montrose 14 it No appeal on showing on Wednesday. Emergencies: Montrose, Smarty Pants, Chipaluck, Aran Blaze.

Cowan it Seldom guilty of a poor run. Must be respected. 3 3290 Ranger Globe 3 M. de Filippi it Has failed badly in two latest starts. Better than that, but will have to be taken on trust. 4 2412 Firm Offer 48. Clark it Beat all but Borrowed Time last Friday. Sure to go close again. 5 8773 Roy Hall 5 It Has trotted some sound races lately, but rise in class here will extend him. 6 4621 Borrowed Time 6R. Butt It Has been trotting splendid races in recent months. Sure to be one of the hardest to beat. 7 4785 Melvander 7 It Has trotted the occasional sound race. Upset chance at best. 8 8075 Hard Cash BD. Jones it Has gone well enough in some of his racing in the past month to have a chance of surprising. 9 0074 Mendelspride 9 .... J. It Some of recent racing has been good enough to give her a chance of reaching a place. 11 1138 Wedgewood 11C. de Filippi It Most unlucky when eighth on January 22. Awkwardly drawn, but looks the one to beat.
