Top sportsman dies at 44

Ken (“Nipper”) McMullen, a former Australian rugby union test half-back who also achieved success at rugby league and cricket, died last week at the age of 44. He recently underwent surgery for a brain tumour. The red-haired McMullen was frequently understudy to Ken Catchpole, but played two tests in New Zealand in 1962, one in South Africa in 1963, and another against England at Sydney in 1963. His rugby league career included four seasons with

Eastern Suburbs in Sydney before he captained and coached Dubbo CYMS to four grand finals and two championships in the country Group 11. During that time McMullen led Dubbo in a match against MaristWestern Suburbs in Christchurch. An outstanding junior cricketer, McMullen represented New South Wales Colts and played for Country against two M.C.C. teams and a West Indian touring team.
