Addington Market Difficult sale for breeding ewes

A yarding of more than 12,000 breeding ewes, the biggest of the season, faced a discerning gallery of buyers at Addington market yesterday.

Because of the low export schedule for sheepmeat and the general lack of confidence in farming, buyers were very selective when choosing replacement ewes.

Even most well known lines of annual-draft ewes had a difficult sale and light, shorn sheep regularly made $5 to $6. Early-shorn ewes appeared to attract slightly more interest because of the value of their fleeces, but even these sheep suffered from the mediocre buying power. Most ewes were $7 to $lO a head cheaper than their counterparts last season. Well bred two-year ewes sold for about $l5 and good ewes made $8 to $ll, depending on wool.

A feature of the market was a line of 486 shorn four-year-old Corriedales from A. T. and A. W. Black, Waiau, which sold at $2l, only slightly less than last season's price.

Other well known lines of ewes were not quite so fortunate. Early-shorn annual draft Halfbreds from D. J. Parsons, Ward, made $lB, compared with $3O last season, and A. F. S. and W. H. Rutherford, Culverden, received $15.40 for annualdraft Corriedales, a reduction of $7.20 on last season’s value.

The bulk of the yarding comprised Corriedale or Halfbred ewes. Among sales of strong-woolled annual draft ewes were Coopworths at $ll.lO, Perendales at $11.20, and a line of capital stock, three-shear, shorn Romneys made $11.60.

In the store lamb section, a feature was a pen of well grown Corriedale ram lambs from R. G. Douglas, Scargill, which fetched $20.80. Most medium to good lambs sold between $ll and $13.40 and small lambs at $4 to $7.

The yardings were 12,300 adult sheep (3400 last week) and 6900 store lambs (8250). A special sale of two-tooth ewes will be held at Addington tomorrow. Sales included:
