Resumed Nigeria links
NZPA-Reuter London Britain and Nigeria had agreed to resume full diplomatic relations, broken two years ago after an abortive kidnap attempt in London, diplomatic sources said yesterday. The two countries were to announce today the date when they would exchange High Commissioners (ambassadors),
the sources said. London and Lagos withdrew their High Commissioners after a failed, July, 1984, attempt to kidnap the former Nigerian Transport Minister, Umaru Dikko, from his London home and ship him home in a crate to face corruption charges. Both countries have sought improved ties since a coup in August against
Major-General Muhammadu Buhari. The Nigerian Foreign Minister, Mr Bolaji Akinyemi, paid a three-day official visit to Britain last month. He said on his departure that he saw no obstacle to a restoration of full diplomatic relations. Nigeria is Britain’s most important trading partner in black Africa.
