Hospital beds soon available again

Surgical and geriatric assessment beds which were closed at Princess Margaret Hospital last year because of nursing shortages will soon be reopened. The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr John McLeod, told the Canterbury Hospital Board’s health services committee yesterday that the situation had vastly improved in recent months. “There has been a tremendous improvement in nursing staff at the hospital which has made a great difference to efficiency and morale,” he said.

The 12 surgical beds closed last year would reopen on Monday, and the 10 geriatric assessment beds which were also closed would be reopened again in the next few weeks.

Dr McLeod said the bed occupancy rate for January was down to 76 per cent, compared with about 90 per cent last year.

The screening holding unit, which had now been going a month, had dealt with 110 patients — 20 per cent had been referred to places other than the acute surgical beds.

About half of that 20 per cent were sent back into the community, and the other half referred to beds elsewhere.
