‘Be Mobile’ changes win council support
Support for changes to the "Be Mobile” programme for disabled persons has been given by the Canterbury United Council.
The Christchurch Transport Board has recommended that the programme eventually be restricted to groups rather than individuals in an effort to save money.
A board member, Mr Patrick Neary, told the council’s urban transport committee that the “Total Mobility” service lost about $105,000 a year. The committee recom-
mended that an approach be made to the Urban Transport Council to increase taxi-fare subsidies 100 per cent for disabled persons.
At present disabled persons who use the “Total Mobility” scheme get 25 per cent of their fare refunded.
Support for a voluntary contribution of $20,000 from Christchurch councils to support the scheme will also be tested. The Christchurch City, Heathcote County, Lyttelton Borough, Paparua County, and Waimairi District
councils will be asked whether they support the voluntary contribution in principle. Budget The committee seeks a $67,400 increase in its budget compared with last year. A total of $305,300 is sought to fund the committee’s work, all of which is expected to come from the Urban Transport Council.
Christchurch ratepayers will not be affected because no contributions come from constituent councils.
