Next wage round lower?

PATRICIA HERBERT
in Wellington The Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, expects the 1986-1987 wage round to be lower than the one just ending. “I think we will see common sense prevail much more,” he said yesterday in a speech to open a new car dealership in his electorate.
His statement came in the same week the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, indicated a return to wage guidelines this year. Commentators have estimated the 1985-1986 round, now in its final stages, is delivering a wage movement of about 20 per cent. Mr Douglas has said repeatedly that this iSftoo
high and yesterday expressed concern that “unrealistic settlements” were still being produced. Jobs and businesses would be at risk, he said, and certainly there would be a loss of profitability. He asked those groups yet to settle or still involved in second-tier bargaining to “consider what I have said.”
