Laced capsule lethal
NZPA-AP Yonkers, New York
A woman who died of cyanide poisoning after taking Tylenol capsules was murdered by someone who placed the poison inside the package, said a local official. The incident led thousands of stores to take the over-the-counter painkiller off their shelves.
“We are dealing with a case of murder,” said the Westchester County executive, Mr Andrew O’Rourke, at a news conference.
The dead woman was Diane Elsroth, aged 23, of Peekskill, New York. Authorities announced on Monday that Miss Elsroth had been fatally poisoned by cyanide after taking Tylenol last Saturday.
Three other capsules in the bottle she used contained the poison, officials said.
No poison or tampering had been found in other bottles of the product. The potassium cyanide would eat through a gelatin capsule in eight to 10
days, said the county chief medical examiner, Dr Millard Hyland, who appeared with Mr O’Rourke.
He did not pinpoint when the cyanide was introduced into the capsules.
Mr Joseph' Valiquette, an F. 8.1. spokesman in New York, said his agency’s investigation indicated the poison was placed only in the box of extra-strength Tylenol from which the victim took a capsule.
