Labourers gain 35 p.c.

PA Wellington Builders’ labourers have won a 35 per cent wage increase — one of the largest in the pay round. Settlement of the Building Labourers’ Award came after a long negotiating session. Agreement was reached on a 15.5 per cent rise, but with a minimum increase of $33 a week. With the addition of a $1 an hour industry allowance, the settlement gives

the lowest paid labourers — previously on a gross weekly wage of $206 — a pay rise of $73 a week. In return', the Labourers’ Union agreed to the introduction of shift work, something it had previously opposed. The union’s national secretary, Mr Charlie Clayton, said yesterday that a shift work clause would be inserted in the award, but shift work could only work with the agreement of the union.
