Wellington rates to rise 25%
PA Wellington Wellington’s rates will probably increase 25 per cent because of increased costs, including wages and salaries, and the upcoming goods and services tax, said the Mayor of Wellington, Mr lan Lawrence, yesterday.
He said the council’s multi-million dollar wage and salary bill for this financial year had been exceeded by $1.5 million because of wage and salary increases. The approaching year would be worse, he predicted. At estimates time, the Wellington City Council would be looking at an increase on its pay roll of about 20 per cent. With GST coming in October, a half-year effect of 5 per cent should be expected.
The council could not absorb such increases without passing them on to ratepayers, Mr Lawrence said.
