Top bowlers dominate
PA Hamilton Top players dominated the post-section pairs play in the Women’s Dominion Bowling tournament at Hamilton yesterday. However, often only a few points separated winners from losers. Last year’s pairs title holder, Thelma Kidd (Matamata), is still in after three wins. She had victories of 25-21 and 21-15 in the morning and beat Matua’s Joan Peacock, 2010, in the third game. Papatoetoe’s Roz Windle, the 1982 pairs champion, also held her own with a convincing 25-4
win over New Lynn’s Jean Smith yesterday afternoon. Her morning games were won, 22-13, and 1611. But two Edinburgh Commonwealth Games team nominees were knocked out — Linwood’s Denise Page was eliminated in the first round after going down, 12-22, to Merle Settle (Hinuera), and a Games non-travel-ling reserve, Vera Bindon (Rocky Nook), held her ground until the third game losing, 13-25, to Waimea’s Rose Avison. Cis Winstanley (Marewa), who has held
the pairs title five times, also survived the first day of post-section play. She had a narrow first victory over Gwenda Kelly (Riverside), 16-15, then went on to more convincing victories over Moira Smyth (Havelock North), 19-15, and Anne Woodley (Gate Pa), 25-17.
Matamata’s Elsie Wilkie, who last held the title in 1980, had some close calls in yesterday’s play, but managed to win ail her games. She beat Jean Caddie (Mairangi Bay), 19-18, Elaine Bond (Lower Hutt), 20-18, and Betty Potter (Roskill), 1716.
