AUSTRALIA Market closes easier
NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier with negative overseas and local news leading to bearish sentiment in the market, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 9.5 points to 1055.2, the all industrials index shed 8.4 points to 1613.4 and the all resources index lost 9.9 points to 627.7. The gold index dropped 22.4 points to 900.4.
Turnover was 61.6 M shares worth $77.4M, with falls outnumbering rises by 292 to 183.
Brokers pointed to falls on Wall Street and London markets overnight, an easing of world oil and commodities prices, a weakening local dollar and the expectation of a larger current account deficit for the 1985-86 year as reasons for the market’s fall.
About 750,000 BHP shares were traded and the stock closed 8c down at 706. Bell Resources dropped 10c to 490 and CSR 4c to 333.
Major mining stocks traded easier with CRA losing 4c to 556, MIM 3c to 280, North Broken Hill 7c to 258 and
Peko Wallsend 12c to 504. Gold-related stocks also fell with Kidston losing 24c to 550, Emperor 10c to 320, Renison the same to 510 and Central Norseman 6c to 630. In the oil and gas sector Santos closed 18c down at 462 after reaching a year’s low of 4.60. Bridge Oil fell 7c to 188, Ampol Exploration 5c to 190 and Beach Petroleum 2c to 65. On the industrial board profit-takers hit News Corporation, which fell 35c to 1215, while among other media stocks, Fairfax jumped 40c to 810. Elsewhere, Adsteam fell 40c to 1170, lEL 30c to 720, Rothmans 20c to 730, FAI 12c to 638 and James Hardie 10c to 340. Cereus gained 75c to 1220 and APA holdings, under a take-over offer from Unity Corp, put on 20c to 650. Major banking stocks traded easier with the National Australia Bank losing 5c to 465, ANZ the same to 465 and Westpac remaining steady on 450. In share price index futures, active March opened 4.5 points easier at 1066.5 and traded down to close at 1058.5.
