Police death toll
Seventeen. New Zealand policemen have been killed in the line of duty. All but two of them were shot. Only four of the offenders were convicted. Three committed suicide, and three were declared insane and unfit to stand trial. The 17 policemen were: Neil McLeod, shot at Mangawhare, near Dargaville, on July 30, 1890. John McGuire, shot at Palmerston North on April 10, 1910. Vivian Dudding, shot at Wellington on April 10, 1919. James Dorgan, shot at Timaru on August 27, 1921. Thomas Heeps, shot at Morrinsville on October 20, 1934.
William Cooper, Frederick Jordan, Percy Tulloch and Edward Best, shot at Koiterangi (now called Kowhitirangi), Westland, on October 8, 1941. William Hughes, shot at Otaki on May 27, 1951. Wallace Chalmers and Neville Power, shot in Auckland on January 6, 1-963. James Richardson ahdßryan Schultz, shot at Lower Hutt on February 3, 1963. Richard Stokes, died after being attacked by two prisoners in the Dunedin police cells on August 15, 1966. Gilbert Arcus, fractured his skull in a scuffle at Tauranga on February 4, 1970. Peter Murphy, shot at Invercargill on September 25, 1976.
