Limit on tickets at Whitecliffs

By

NEVIN TOPP

The organisers of this month’s Whitecliffs Music Festival are limiting the number of tickets to 4000 and are not making gate sales.

This is the fifth year that the festival has been held at DD Appaloosa Stud, run by Deirdre and John Grenell (formerly John Hore), at Whitecliffs, near Darfield. Each year the festival has become increasingly popular, offering a wide range of musical styles, plus ' poetry, comedy, dance, mime and creative workshops, over a weekend. i For this reason a limit has now been placed on ticket; sales.

The: festival is gradually taking on an international flavour as well. Two years ago, Emmylou Harris, the American country rock singer, was recording a “That’s Country” television show in Christchurch, and ended up giving a performance at the festival.

This year it is the turn of Jango Edwards, the uncrowned King of Fools, who has agreed to give a performance on the Saturday evening of the festival. Edwards, an American who is based in Amsterdam, is in Christchurch as part of the Festival of Fringe Theatre.

The organisers are also trying to stress the family

aspect of the festival, saying that it is not a rock concert and there are artists to suit all tastes. Children under 15 years old are allowed in free.

Once again there will be two stages being used, and these will also be used for children’s shows. The area has basic camping facilities, with one advance on last year — hot showers. About 38 acts have been named so far for the week-end event, which runs from Friday evening, February 21 to Sunday evening, February 23. For jazz lovers there is Malcolm McNeill, the singer, and also the St

Albans Serenaders, who specialize in 20s and 30s material.

The fringe elements of country and western music are also included — The Canterbury Bush Orchestra, the Schlitz Mining Company (a jug band), the Gypsy Pickers, Bushfire, and Mountain Dew.

The Milky Bar Blues Band, the Pacific Rhythm Road Show, and Louie and the Hotsticks are among the rock music acts.

Tickets for the festival are set at $l5 for the week-end and $lO for a day.
