South Otago on verge of drought again
PA Dunedin Areas of South Otago are on the verge of a drought, with some farmers already shifting thousands of stock into Southland for grazing. Normally lush pastures have disappeared as farmers contend with a season which has produced some of the hottest days on record. Rainfall is well down and patchy, some areas having had little if any rain \ since before Christmas. A Balclutha farm advisory officer, Mr Graeme Pringle, said the situation in some districts was critical.
More than 30,000 stock have been shifted out for grazing. The destocking has gained momentum since Christmas as farmers, sensing a dry season, quickly sold off lambs. South Otago was declared a drought area last year, and this status will remain in force until June, 1986, which will allow taxation deferment on sale of capital stock. The Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, will be in Otago bn February 18 and after addressing a meeting _of Otago Federated Farmers will tour drought-affected districts.
