Fleeing youth fell to death
PA Wellington An Upper Hutt youth fell to his death late last Thursday while running from the police after being found in a stolen truck, a police spokesman said yesterday. He was Damon Lorde Phillips, aged 17, a labourer. Sergeant Mike Kemp
said the body of Mr Phillips was not found until 3 p.m. the next day. The police believe he died of multiple injuries suffered after falling 10 metres on to rocks by the Mangaroa River at the head .of Hutt Valley. Any/Upper Hutt policeman’noticed a truck on
State highway 2 without headlights at 10.15 p.m. on February 6. He chased the truck and found it parked on the side of Plateau Road, Te Mania. Sergeant Kemp, said five youths in tQe truck became scared and tried
to flee. The policeman caught four of them but the driver, Damon Phillips, ran off into the darkness. He said the policeman was unable to chase Phillips, and assumed he had escaped. A coroner’s inquest will be held.
