Ambassador’s view not policy

NZPA staff correspondent Washington The United States State Department has disagreed with the United States Ambassador to Australia, who claimed that New Zealand was “being punished for being a bad boy.” A spokesman said at an official briefing yesterday that the department did not agree with the interpretation of the fall-out from the A.N.Z.U.S. row as stated by the new Ambassador, Mr William Lane. The spokesman said the United States position was that it had “readjusted” its defence and security co-operation with New Zealand last year and there had been “no change in its response” since then. As well as Mr Lane’s comments last week, the Secretary of the Navy, Mr John Lehman, also criticised New Zealand, calling the ban on port visits by nuclear ships “outrageous” and the "height of irresponsibility.” The State Department said yesterday that there was no link in the timing of the respective comments. They were “independent assessments” and

neither the timing nor the content was planned, a spokesman said. “There is no intention to intimidate New Zealand,” the spokesman said.
