PA Hamilton The second day’s play in the pairs at the Women’s Dominion Bowling tournament, in Hamilton, was disastrous for three Commonwealth Games team nominees.

Ann Katavich (Point Wells), Mille Khan (Oamaru) and Judy Howat (Wellington) all failed to qualify for the post-section play. Katavich had three wins and three losses, with her vital last game lost just 21-22 against Morrinsville’s Phyl Gatenby. Howat lost three games, two only marginally when she went down, 18-19 and 17-18. Khan lost her fifth game, 15-22, to Trix Boothby (Nolan Town). Khan had three losses and two wins. Two other Games nominees had brighter days in pairs section play. Joyce Osborne (Manawatu). and the nontravelling reserve, Vera Bindon (Rocky Nook), had five straight wins. Denise Page (Linwood), another Games nominee, quali-

fied yesterday afternoon. After one loss on Monday she won five other games convincingly. Champions from as far back as the 1950 s made it through section play yesterday. They will be competing with the 266 qualifiers who begin post-section play today. The reigning champion, Thelma Kidd (Matamata), qualified with games to spare. She and Vi Fox won all their matches; Yesterday they beat Olga Alty (Bucklands Beach), 20-13, “and Doreen Bartlett (Papatoetoe), 24-3. • Cis Winstanley (Marewa) who won the first of her five pairs titles in 1957, and the last in 1984, qualified yesterday after winning four games and losing one. She beat Rhona Lawson (Thames), 2911, and Hamilton’s Ruby White, 23-16. The pairs winner in 1983, Joan Porter (Central), qualified after losing only one of her games. Elsie Wilkie (Matamata) .the pairs champion in 1980, had five wins and one loss to qualify.
