Extradition move delayed

AAP correspondent Sydney Extradition procedures against a New Zealandborn Indian faith healer and leader of a religious commune have had to be delayed for a year because of the big workload of Sydney courts. The proceeding against Armit Lal Narain, wanted by the New Zealand police on kidnapping, assault and unlawful detention charges, cannot be heard until January 29, 1987.
Narain was arrested in Sydney on January 25 under a provisional warrant from the New Zealand police.
Extradition warrants were executed in the Waverley Court on January 28. But because Narain has chosen to fight the extradition, the case and evidence before him must first be heard in an Australian court. Narain made a brief appearance for mention in the Castlereagh Street Court yesterday, where it was said the first avail-
able date for the extradition hearing would be January 28, 1987.
The Court also heard that because of the extradition agreement between Australia and New Zealand, Narain would have to appear before a court every seven days. The New Zealand police said yesterday they were “disappointed” about the delay. Detective Chief Inspector Michael Charles, head of the Wellington C. 1.8., said he had expected a delay, but not such a long one.
