Top Performer for Cambridge
Top Performer, a four-year-old with a record of Imin 55.65, is the first winning son of Niatross (Imin 49.25), the fastest pacer ever, to be secured for stud duty in New Zealand.
The royally-bred horse has been purchased by Messrs Brian Meale, of Auckland, and Charlie Hunter, of Cambridge, the owners of the newlyformed Kenwood Stud of Cambridge. Top Performer will arrive in New Zealand within two months and be given every chance to acclimatise before he does his first season of stud duty in the spring at Kenwood Stud, which will also be the home of the boom stallion, Smooth Fella, next season. Top Performer, a horse
standing just under 16 hands, wore a 61-in hopple, no boots and an open bridle. He had only seven starts for four wins, two seconds and a fourth before it was decided to ease him as he was being troubled by a splint at the back of a knee. Puchased as a yearling for §330,000 by the American horseman, Ted Wing, for Mr Laurence Kadish, of New York, Top Performer returned his best time of Imin 55.6 s when he won by more than three lengths at Garden State Raceway, New Jersey, last September. That day he started from the outside of the second row and paced his last quarter in 28.65. Top Performer is out of the Bret Hanover mare, Lucky Tidings, the dam of
three two-minute performers, including Perfect Angle and Distant Land, both credited with Imin 57.25. Bret Hanover is the champion broodmare sire in North America, his daughters having produced such champions as Nihilator and Barberry Spur, which recorded Imin 54.2 s at two. His second dam is Good Tidings, by Duane Hanover. She is also the dam of Cruise (Imin 565) and Current Image (Imin 57.45).
Top Performer is closely related to Sonsam, which from three crops of racing age has produced 14 with records of better than Imin 555, two having bettered Imin 535. His third dam, Good
Counsel, paced Imin 57s free-legged, and is a sister to Laurel Princess, the second dam of Sonsam.
