Yearling sale promises high prices
By G. K. YULE A firm market, especially for the more attrac-tively-bred and presented lots, is predicted for the New Zealand national standardbred yearling sales to be held in Christchurch tomorrow and Friday.
Withdrawals have reduced the catalogue to slightly more than 300 lots and with the sale spread over two days buyers will not face such marathon sittings as they have had to contend with on occasions.
The scene for a successful sale was set at Claudelands on Sunday when the average for the northern sale rose to a record level of $5492 against $3457. Last year’s national sales saw a record price of $Bl,OOO for a colt by Smooth Fella from Sakuntala, with several other lots surpassing the previous record.
Twelve months ago the New Zealand dollar was worth about 60c in Australia and it has now firmed to some 75c. Even at this figure the better yearlings will still appeal to Australians, who have shown great interest in this year’s sales. Last year Australian in-
terest was largely responsible for a record average price of $7214 for 157 lots. This year the general prediction is an average of close to $lO,OOO. There will be firm inquiry for the top colts, but it could be the choicest fillies that attract most competition. In the last 18 months or so syndicates have been active in gathering up mares of stout bloodlines, but they have almost exhausted the market. Some have not filled their requirements and are expected to seek yearling fillies this week. Once again it will be the progeny of Smooth Fella and Lordship which should dominate the sales. Last year Smooth Fella averaged $20,513 for 18 lots sold, while the average for 10 by Lordship was $13,900. Both horses could finish with even greater averages. Unless the pattern changes dramatically it will be only those stallions with well-proved performers on the race tracks which will command great attention. The progeny of sires other than half a dozen or so regarded as top commercial propositions could again be hard to quit.
