AUSTRALIA Market loses sting
NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier, with little selling pressure and overseas interest. Resources and gold stocks led the market down, brokers said. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 4.4 points to 1064.6, the all industrials index had lost 0.4 points to 1621.8 and the all resources index had shed 7.2 points to 637.5. The gold index dropped 16.2 points to 922.8.
Turnover was 47.7 M shares worth 568.3 M, with falls outnumbering rises by 254 to 195.
Brokers said profit-taking in industrial stocks in afternoon trading had also pushed the market down.
Interest in BHP was moderate. About 700,000 shares traded and the stock closed 4c down at 714, with investors waiting for new developments in Bell Resources’ partial bid for the company. Bell Resources fell 20c to 500 and CSR lost 11c to 337.
Mining stocks closed easier, with CRA falling 6c to 560, MIM 9c to 283, Elders 4c to 113, Western Mining 3c to 337 and Peko Wallsend 2c to 520.
Gold-related stocks also eased. GMK fell 30c to 840, Kidston 12c to 574, Renison 10c to 520 and Poseidon and Sons of Gwalia both shed 5c to 205 and 350 respectively. In the oil and gas sector Santos lost 8c to 480, Bridge Oil 5c to 195 and Woodside Petroleum added 1c to 116.
On the industrial board News Corporation continued its strong run after Monday’s fall of 30c, gaining 30c to 1250, while ACI added 6c to .326 on rumours of an impending take-over bid from across the Tasman.
Elsewhere, Cereus gained 75c to 1145, Rothmans 40c to 750, Brierley Investments 16c to 576, Fairfax 10c to 770 and Bond Corporation 4c to 240. However, FAI lost 10c to 650, ANI 6c to 315 and TNT 4c to 288. Major banking stocks traded easier, with the National Australia Bank losing 8c to 470, ANZ 5c to 470 and Westpac remaining steady on 450. In share price index futures, active March opened 2.5 points easier at 1077.0 and traded down to close at 1071.0.
