Border asks for break
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian Cricket Board has given its captain, Allan Border, permission to stand down from touring Sharjah, in the Middle East, in April. Border would have just returned from a threeTest tour of New Zealand starting tomorrow and has asked for time to spend with his young family.
The A.C.B.’s media manager Mr lan McDonald, said that the board had readily agreed to Border’s request in the light of his tremendous service to Australian cricket in the last 18 months.
Border’s place will be taken by a young Victorian batsman and occa-
sional medium -pace bowler, Dean Jones. Ray Bright will lead the team to' Sharjah on a 15day visit with David Boon as his vice-captain and Greg Matthews as the third tour selector. The team to tour Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, is: Ray Bright (captain), David Boon (vice-captain), Simon Davis, David Gilbert, Dean Jones, Craig McDermott, Geoff Marsh, Greg Matthews, Wayne Phillips, Bruce Reid, Greg Ritchie, Steve Waugh, Tim Zoehrer.
The former Australian wicket-keeper, Phillips, still has to pass a fitness test after a finger injury, for the tour of New Zealand and Sharjah.
