Darts player aims to turn professional
NZPA staff correspondent London New Zealand’s world masters darts champion, Lilian Barnett, hopes to turn professional and stay in Britain for several years. The Timaru woman, aged 43, originally planned to be in Europe just a few months to gain experience, but how says she is set on making a career here in Britain if the British Government will allow her to stay. Since Barnett’s world masters win at London in December she has finished third-equal in the British Open and won the Mediterranean Open in Spain. She gained encouragement from defeating the British Open champion, Gwen Sutton, over five legs in the Mediterranean final last week. In a semi-final she
repeated her world masters final win over another top British player, Sonya Ralphs. Barnett now has a permanent home with friends at a London hotel and is a reserve for the Middlesex county team. She is aiming to play tournaments Including a circuit of holiday camps which starts with Butlins at Easter. Meanwhile, she is applying to the Home Office for permission to extend her stay in Britain.
