A festive end to summer

The Summer Times programme will close for 1986 leaving us with the theme of Peace and Peoples Day, which will be held at the usual venue in North Hagley Park this Sunday, February 16. The theme of peace is one chosen to support the United Nations which designated 1986 as the International Year of Peace.

Still dwelling on this theme of peace and unity, various cultural groups will be performing at the park on the day. Stalls for different countries will also be there. Different types of food from other cultures will be available for all to sample; this includes the better known Maori hangi. Children with the best

bicycles decorated with flowers will be judged during the earlier part of the day in the Yates Fun with Flowers competition. Gift vouchers and prizes for this competition have been donated by Arthur Yates and Co, Ltd. The Press Fun Ride on bicycles is scheduled to finish in Hagley Park later in the day where the major prize-giving will take place. Summer Times organisers will set up a maypole from which the public are encouraged to hang something relevant to the theme of international peace. Flags, small craft items and so on are all welcomed for the may-pole. For information on

peace, look out for the peace group display and activities during the Peace and Peoples Day. Face painting should prove to be a novelty with many children and the burying of a time capsule and new games.

At the end of the day homing pigeons will be released which should be spectacular to watch.

The Pacific Roadshow,; a group of artists, will be there to present a wide range of original Latin American, rock, reggae, jazz, country, and folk music. Members of this group come from a wide background of cultures such as Maori, German, French, Austrian, American, Jamaican, Chilean and New Zealand.
