Golfer beats age
PA Wanganui Leo Stanaway, aged 82, finds age no handicap on the golf course. The octogenarian broke the age barrier for the “eighth or ninth time” during the week-end when he carded 79, a net 62 from his 17 handicap, in an R.S.A. tournament at Castlecliff, Wanganui. The retired civil avia-
tion supervisor last beat his age 12 months ago, about the same time that he carded his third hole-in-one. In 53 years, Mr Stanaway has been a keen player, an administrator and a course designer. He designed and helped construct the nine-hole Nandi Airport golf course in Fiji in 1952 and 1953,
was twice president of that club and is now a life member. He hopes to beat his age again. “That’s my ambition. It’s not an easy thing to do,” he said. “I just hope that I see tomorrow morning’s sunrise.”
