British to revive suburbs
NZPA-Reuter London The British Government has announced plans to j; revive eight run-down, b immigrant - populated r inner city areas, two of b which have been the rscene of serious rioting. An employment spokes- , man, Mr Kenneth Clarke, j, told Parliament that j under a £8 million ($21.2 million) pilot scheme, a Ministerial team would r. supervise efforts to stimu- t= late local economies and fimprove the environment in areas selected. “We shall give special i, attention to the problems of young people from eth- f nic minorities where they r are particularly disadvantaged,” Mr Clarke said. The eight areas selected include the St j,Paul’s district of Bristol, j i scene of rioting in 1981, and Handsworth in Birmingham, where there was. serious rioting last year.
