Asian pear the next boom crop?
PA Levin The Chinese gooseberry (kiwifruit) led New Zealand’s recent horticultural boom and soon it may be the turn of another Oriental fruit, the Asian pear. The Levin Horticultural
Field Days Society has given $7OOO to the Levin Horticultural Research Centre to be used in setting up an experimental block of the fruit. Asian pears could be an important export to Japan where they are considered delicacies.
Mr Gavin Kidd, of the Field Days Society, said the grant, made from the proceeds of this year’s field days, is part of promoting new crops in Horowhenua. Other field studies of Asian pears are being done elsewhere in the North Island.
