In search of space to exhibit works

Lack of a suitable venue is hindering the progress of a new artists’ co-operative in Christchurch. According to a local painter, Linda James, the Christchurch Artists’ Cooperative urgently needs a space to hold exhibitions in. “It does not have to be flash, anything available in the way of empty buildings or spaces as long as it’s cheap would be suitable,” she said. The co-operative has recently been formed to give artists an alternative outlet for their work. It plans to hold a pre-
liminary joint exhibition in temporary premises, and would eventually like to have a permanent venue including an exhibition area with space for workshops and studios. The non-profit organisation would be open to artists working in multimedia and multi-discip-lines, ranging from performance artists to painters and sculptors.
Ms James thinks the cooperative will stimulate artists in Christchurch. “There are a lot of artists around and it is very hard and very competitive to find galleries,”’ she said. “It has become quite nerve-racking.” Waiting lists of up to
two years at some galleries has resulted in a loss of impetus for some artists. She believes the cooperative will give alternative artists who do not fit into the present galleries a place to exhibit.
“It will also be a place to meet, exchange ideas, provide information, and share experience, facilities and skills.”
It is envisaged artists will be able to economise on their expenses through sharing equipment and purchasing bulk quanties of materials. The Christchurch Artists’ Co-operative can be contacted through P.O. Box 22440, Christchurch.
