Greenpeace
Sir,—l think your leading article of last Thursday was must unjust to Greenpeace. In suggesting that its role is to make mischief, you overlook the identity of the true mischief-makers. In setting up V.L.F. transmission experiments for military communications from Antarctica (in complete contravention of the spirit of the Antarctic Treaty) the United States Navy is the real mischief-maker — not the organisation that seeks to blow the whistle on such activities. In dumping nuclear waste into the Atlantic without regard for the
consequences, the British Government was a mischief-maker, not Greenpeace whose members risked their lives to draw attention to the practice. In providing transport for the Rongelap islanders to their new home on Mejato Greenpeace carried out a humanitarian task. Those who destroyed their original home with atomic tests in the 1950 s (the mischief-makers) should really have provided the transport — not the organisation you so unfairly belittle in your leader.—Yours, etc., PETER STOCKER. February 10, 1986.
