Economic package and farmers
Sir, —Mr Douglas’s and Mr MOyle’s “economic package” is supposed to be beneficial for farmers. The proposed changes to the “standard value system” for livestock will increase my tax liability by 77 per cent for each of the five years the change is phased in. I intend farming for another 20 years, so I will be taxed on the capital value of my livestock 20 years before they are sold. This is as unjust as the corner dairy business paying tax 20 years in advance on its stock. The lack of forethought of the implications of the "economic package” is scandalous, making gmockery of the Ministers’ sincerity in attempting positive changes for agriculture. Possible benefits from the economic package are a reduction of tariffs on pharmaceutical goods and crochet needles. How increased taxation, cheaper condoms, and crochet needles are supposed to help farmers defies all logic.—Yours, etc.,
B. K. MACFARLANE Parnassus R. D., February 9, 1986.
