Waiting for the big win

Forty-year-old Robby Box has never done a decent day’s work in his life. His fantasy is that gambling will pay his way in the world and secure a life of ease for himself, his girlfriend, Jan, and her daughter, Debby. Of course, he will look after his old mum and her gentleman friend, Tommy, as well — that is, when the big win comes along.

But the big win proves to be consistently elusive for Robby. Time and time again he thinks that this time the cards will hold, that this dog or horse will romp home a clear, but long-odds winner. In spite of his defects, Robby is so likeable that he gets away with letting down the people who care for him time after time. His relationships are tested to the limit, but, somehow, Robby seems to bounce right back. This is the basis of “Big

Deal,” a new 10-part 8.8. C. drama series which chronicles Robby’s lowlife progress through poker-schools, betting shops and dog tracks, beginning on Two at 8.30 p.m.

Ray Brooks stars as Robby; Sharon Duce is Jan and Lisa Geoghan plays Debby.
