Young racer shines

PA Tauranga Spectators at Baypark Speedway, Tauranga, may have witnessed the arrival of a bright new star in New Zealand midget car racing when an Aucklander, Michael Kendall, aged 19, became the 1986 North Island champion.

A late substitute in the field for his father, Ron, who has gone to Australia, Kendall outdrove some of the best drivers in New Zealand.

He has been racing for a couple of seasons at Auckland in an older car. But on Saturday evening, running his father’s highly developed Volkswagen car for only the second time, he showed his potential. It was a pity that his victory was marred by his participation in an incident in the third heat which saw the former New Zealand champion, Ted Tracey, knocked out of the running. The pair were tied for the lead on points after two tremendous races, and eveiyone was looking forward to the deciding third heat. Instead Kendall and Tracey touchedwheels immediately after the race started. Tracey’s car was thrown high in the air and then somersaulted down the track in a horrifying multiple rollover.

Though knocked unconscious, Tracey recovered to walk back to the pits.
