Man. Utd survives mauling to draw
NZPA-Reuter London Manchester ■ United withstood a second-half mauling to hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in one of the best first division games of the English soccer season on Sunday.
With both teams needing a victory to lift them above the league’s leaders, Everton, the match was played at a frenetic pace and United’s new Danish signing, Johnny Sivebaek, looked understandably overawed by the occasion.
United had the better of the opening exchanges and took a deserved lead after 15 minutes through a midfielder, Colin Gibson, following a slick through-ball from the Welshman, Mark Hughes. Liverpool’s problems appeared to multiply when they lost Paul Walsh, scorer of 18 goals in his last 24 games, with an ankle injury.
But the arrival of a substitute, John Wark, turned the game.
The former Scottish
international midfielder, who has a penchant for scoring from the most unlikely situations, scrambled home the equaliser after 41 minutes when he pounced on a Sammy Lee shot which had rebounded off the foot of the post.
United were never seen as an attacking force again but their defence held firm despite incessant home pressure. They now join Everton ,on the 56-point mark, two ahead of Liverpool.
