Fruit orchardists’ house plan approved

An application, to build a house on a property to be developed as; a berry fruit orchard and market garden was approved by the Papaura County Council’s town planning hearing committee yesterday.

Mr and Mrs G. and J. Greengrass intend to plant strawberries, raspberries and boysenberries on the front of their 4ha Old West Coast Road property. They would also like to plant a walnut orchard and vegetables. The applicants plan to graze a small flock of stud poll Dorset ewes. Mr Greengrass told the committee that his family would establish the property and later provide part-time work for others. The council’s assistant planner, Mr Peter Eman,

said that the application met the criteria of the District Planning Scheme and the Town and Country Planning Act, 1977. Calf rearing An application to build on a Tai Tapu property and rear calves intensively was refused by the committee on economic grounds. Mr W. G. P. Marley proposed to use an existing barn on a 15ha property next to the Christ-church-Akaroa highway for raising about 80 calves. The stock would be grazed within electric fences after they were weaned, he said.

The work was expected to provide one full-time job and some casual ployment, he said. *

Cr W. S. Longman expressed his concern that the return from raising the calves might not provide an adequate profit for Mr Marley. Flower growers The committee approved an application for a dwelling on a rural property in conjunction with flower and vegetable production and cattle fattening. Mr and Mrs B. W. and S. M. Olson plan to build on a sha property on Sutherlands Road. The council declined the dwelling application last year. This year’s application has a more intensive horticultural use of the land, including the use of a greenhouse and flower house for dying and storing flowers.
