Kidd back in fine form

PA Hamilton The reigning champion, Thelma Kidd (Matamata), was back in fine form yesterday in the pairs at the women’s dominion bowling tournament at Hamilton.

After a disappointing performance in the fours, Kidd, playing with Vi Fox, won all three games. She beat Gwen Attwood (Hunters Corner), 20-7, Margaret Nicholson (Gate Pa), 25-16, and Agnes Beazley (Linwood), 20-12. Four wins out of six games are needed to qualify for post section play.

Three more games will be played today. The 1984 champion, Cis Winstanley (Marewa), had one loss yesterday. She won her first game against Vern Walker (New Plymouth), 30-9, lost the second to Nora Camp! (Kamo), 25-17, and beat Pat Brady (Tokoroa East), 21-17. Joan Porter (Central), the 1983 pairs champion, had two wins and a loss in the first day’s play, and the 1982 pairs winner, Roz Windle (Papatoetoe), also dropped her second game. She needs to win two games today to qualify.

Matamata’s Elsie Wilkie had two wins and a loss. She was beaten by Sarah Matangi (Ngongotaha), 27-18. Wilkie and Zelda

Clements won the pairs in 1980. The Commonwealth Games team nominees, Judy Howat (Wellington), and Rhoda Ryan (Matamata), will be looking for strong performances today. Both women won only one of their three games yesterday and will need to win all three games today to qualify for post section play tomorrow.

Ryan had a 26-8 win in her first game against Mangere’s Nola McKinnon at Leamington yesterday morning. She was later beaten, 19-16, and 18-15.

Howat went down, 1021, at Pukekawa’s Lorna Robinson in the third round. She lost narrowly to Takapuna’s Maureen Mercer, 18-19, in her second game at Beerescourt. Her only victory, 20-15, was over Whakatane’s Joan Hunt. Other Games nominees, Denise Page (Linwood), and Ann Katavich (Point Wells), had two wins and a loss yesterday. They will be looking for a minimum of two wins today if they are to qualify. Katavich lost, 13-18, to Dargaville’s Fay Orr in the first game. She had clear wins of 31-12 and 25-9 in the afternoon. Page had a 15-16 loss and wins of 20-15 and 28-15.
