Footballers shine
The Canterbury rugby team had an exciting win with one ball to spare in the annual 40-over, charity cricket match against a Canterbury Promotion Council XI at Dudley Park, Rangiora. Requiring 206 runs to win, the rugby team was given a brisk start by Victor Simpson (25), Dale Atkins (22) and Warwick Taylor (25), but was then in some trouble at 87 for five. Then Robbie Deans
(63) and Jock Hobbs (50 not out) turned the innings round. With just two balls remaining, and three runs required, Doug Bruce came to the wicket and hit the winning runs from the first ball faced. It was a popular win, evening the score after the Promotion Council's comfortable win last year. Batting first, the Council XI reached 205 for 6 wickets. The main contributors were Gareth James
with a fine 56 not out, Martin Hadlee 44, Barry Hadlee 35 and Chris Doig 33. Major performance awards went to Jock Hobbs (Player of the Day), Robbie Deans (best batting), Martin Hadlee (best bowling), and Joe Leota (best fielding). About 700 people attended, and a collection taken for the Bethany Rest Home Furnishings Appeal yielded $3OO.
