‘Whingeing sheep farmers’ attacked
PA Wellington Attacks by fanners on the Government for giving grape growers $lO million to rip out surplus vines and not helping mainstream agriculture have been criticised by the Hawke’s Bay member of Parliament, Dr Bill Sutton.
Federated Farmers’ president, Mr Peter Elworthy, accused the Government of being inconsistent in its treatment of the two sectors. Dr Sutton called Mr Elworthy “the true voice of the whingeing South Island sheepfarmers.” Instead of criticising the wine industry package of assistance for one year,
Mr Elworthy should take a look at the $2 billion given to sheepfarmers in cash handouts during the last six years, he said. “Why are they still coming back for more?” Grape growers’ subsidies were a drop in the bucket compared with the help already given to sheep and cattle farmers.
The Government announced its handout scheme to cut wine production just after releasing its economic statement in December.
The long-awaited statement contained major economic reforms, . but offered no short-term assistance to struggling farmers.
