Grandfather rows 40kms
PA Auckland A grandfather training to row from Auckland to Great Barrier Island has rowed from Mission Bay, Auckland, to Kawau Island. Roy Meehan, aged 54, rowed the distance - more than 40km - at the weekend in 7hr 15min 30sec. He made the journey in a 5m gig.
The Papatoetoe osteopath said it was his hardest row so far but was only a warm-up for his "ultimate trip” - from Auckland to Great Barrier Island.
Meehan represented New Zealand in wrestling at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. When he suffered a knee injury he turned to rowing and windsurfing. “I guess I have rowed about 350 ..autical miles so far this summer,” he said.
