Truth (The Kid) big winner in Malaysia
By J. J. BOYLE
The Kid, winner of four races from the Riccarton stable of Peter Jones, is now a substantial contributor to the success story of the leading Malaysian trainer, Teh Choon Beng. But the Brigand gelding no longer bears the name of The Kid.
Malaysian racing knows him as Truth, and he was one of the stars of the racing on that circuit in January.
In successive starts he won the $150,000 Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup, 1700 m, at Batu Gantong and the $150,000 Governor’s Gold Cup over 2200 m at Penang.
His time of 1:42 for the shorter race was a course record. His win in the Governor’s Gold Cup was described by one newspaper as a “superb staying feat.’’ The negotiations for the sale of the new star of Malaysian racing were handled by Mr Rob Fielder, of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. Since Truth’s brilliant achievements from the Teh stable, last year’s leading trainer has visited New Zealand for the Trentham and Waikato sales and represented the Tan family in' securing two youngsters, both by Sir Tristram, for a total outlay of
$1,350,000 at the National sale.
Last season Teh Choon Beng became the first Malaysian trainer since World War II to saddle more than 100 winners in a season and brought in a record total of $2.5 million in stake money for his owners.
The leading stable rider for Teh Choon Beng last season was the New Zealander Nigel Tiley. Tiley rode 57 winners, two more than Teh Choon Beng’s apprentice, Ismadi Ismaii, who has been Truth’s successful partner in that gelding’s recent major successes.
