Bold run expected from Orb today

NZPA-AAP Sydney The former New Zealander, Orb, troubled by Sydney’s humidity, is nevertheless expected to turn on a bold showing when he resumes at Warwick Farm today. His trainer, Les Bridge, said yesterday that the classy Noble Bijou four-year-old was used to the cooler weather of the South Island and was still adjusting to the Sydney climate.

Bridge said he still expected a big race from Orb in the Birdcage Welter (1400 m despite his top weight of 62.5 kg.

Orb, the winner of nine of his 18 starts, has not raced since he excited racegoers with a frontrunning display to beat subsequent Villiers Stakes

winner, Dinky Flyer, and Lord Paddington over 1600 m at Randwick on October 19.

He has been working soundly for the last eight or nine weeks and last Friday ran a sound fourth behind Let’s Get Physical in a Randwick barrier trial.

Bridge said he was asked for an effort in that outing and will have been improved by the run.

“He should be hard to beat and would probably start even money favourite," Bridge said.

If Orb runs well he will be aimed at the $lOO,OOO Chipping Norton Stakes (1600 m at Warwick Farm on February 22.

Orb has had two races in Australia, the other a 1400 m fresh-up win in

welter company at Randwick on October 5.

The gelding’s seven New Zealand wins include the Southland Guineas last season.

Bridge said the rider, Mark de Montfort, would not necessarily try to lead all the way on Orb and would be just as capable of winning by sitting behind the leaders.

Among the hardest for Orb to beat will be the Brian Mayfield-Smith-trained Sculptor, which has been racing consistently in welter class and may be ready to win.

He was third behind Regal Shower and Allegro Park over 1900 m at Canterbury on January 29 last time out.
