G.T.B.’s 85 years in Christchurch

The New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Travel Office, under its former name of the Government Tourist Bureau, has been operating in Christchurch for 85 years. The bureau was one of the first branch offices set up by the new Department of Tourist and Health Resorts when it was established in February 1901. Thomas Edward Donne, a capable and energetic senior Railways official was appointed head of this the first Government tourism department in the world.

Initially the Christchurch NZTP Travel Office, like the other branch offices, operated mainly as an enquiry and information agency. However, by 1910 they were given the authority to process their own tickets.
