Youth unemployment

Sir, — Persons such as Kerry McLoughlin (February 3) with no job and no money show how terribly effective is the propaganda against the dole. It amounts to a victory for the outspoken greedies and rednecks — bitter and energetic in opposing the dole, satisfied only in reducing the already poor circumstances of those suffering unemployment. The dole is a right. It is part of the social contract; those unable to find work are entitled to the dole. It is one component of our social provisions intended to reduce hardship and disadvantage. It is as legitimate as our “free” health care, “free” education, the sickness benefit and national superannuation, paid by taxes. Do critics of the dole decline these provisions? Kerry McLoughlin should contact the local unemployed workers’ rights group, and claim the dole, without apology to anyone. — Yours, etc.,

L. M. SLATER. February 6, 1986.
