Wage increases

Sir—ln the article “Wage increases Achilles heel” (“The Press,” February 5), the Opposition’s finance spokesman, Mr Michael Cox, says that the wage round is an utter disaster, inflationary, etc. I agree absolutely, but I do wonder why Mr Cox and the National Party did not say so before the event. They had that chance at the Timaru by-elec-tion, but seemed quite happy then to carry on with the systems of the previous National administration — parities, relativities, trickle downs and the rest of the claptrap. Only one party at the by-election said clearly and concisely before the event that “wages increases gained by wage rounds, parities, indexation, relativities ... are inflationary and do great harm to the less fortunate lower-paid workers, beneficiaries, etc.” I had the honour of representing that party — the first party in New Zealand founded on firm social democratic principles, the New Labour Party — at the byelection. — Yours, etc.,

ALAN FALLOON. February 10, 1986.
